Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the agency for human settlements mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. UN-Habitat helps the urban poor by transforming cities into safer and healthier places with better opportunities. It works with organizations at every level, including all spheres of government, civil society and the private sector. This post is located in the Urban Basic Services Branch, Kigoma duty station.


Under the direct supervision of the Head of the Water and Sanitation Unit, the Associate Programme Officer will be responsible for the day-to-day management and implementation of the UN-Habitat tasks and ensure overall coordination with other participating UN agencies in the UN Joint Programme for Kigoma. He/She will also work in close collaboration with UNICEF and WHO, representatives of regional, district and local government authorities of Kibondo, Kasulu and Kakonko and other project partners, in coordinating the planning and implementation of the Programme.

The UN Joint Programme is intended to improve human security in the region of Kigoma which receives refugees from the neigbouring Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It supports the humanitarian-development nexus by linking together the existing UN response to refugees and migrants with an expanded development support to the host communities. It focuses mainly on the 3 districts of Kasulu, Kibondo and Kakonko surrounding the three existing refugee camps. The Joint Programme is being implemented under the framework of Phase II of the United Nations Development Assistance Plan (UNDAP II) 2016-2021 through a Multi-Partner Trust Fund.
